We caught up with Andy recently to talk about all things musical. Here’s what he had to say…

N4U; Dude - Tell everyone what you've been up to in the two years since you were in News 4U.

Well, I’ve been playing a lot of shows. I’ve played the Bluebird in Nashville 5 times since, and the Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnatti.  I toured the east coast with my girlfriend.  We started in Louisville, went out through West Virginia, Virginia, down through the Carolina’s and back up through Chattanooga and Nashville, TN.  My girlfriend and I wound up getting engaged on this whirlwind trip! I’ve been writing new songs and recording as well as playing shows with the Pie (Ten Pound Pie), Terry Payne and Elliott Sublett.  A couple of months ago I re-issued the 2007 Crows and Buzzards album with some bonus recordings tagged on.

You've been at the Boiler Room every week forever now. What's the craziest thing you've seen at open mic night?

I’ve seen a guy ask a cop for a ride home. Girls falling over monitors-that happens quite often. There’s something crazy happening all the time. The open mic night is always fun. You never know what to expect.

Talk about some of the current stuff you're working on.

I just released a CD at the end of July, this year. It was collaboration with a co-writing partner, and great friend of mine from Nashville, Dustin Bogue. We aptly named the CD The Brasher/Bogue Project. Creative?!? Dustin and I toured Iowa and Nebraska over the summer and came back to do a CD release party right here in Owensboro, which was awesome! We completed this project in about 4 months. This consisted of driving to and from Nashville a couple times every week and all-nighter sessions. And I just put up a new website…check it out at www.andybrasher.com. My friend Aaron Kaiser designed it for me. All of my CDs and t-shirts are available on this site. You can also get my CDs at my live shows, at the Owensboro Music Center, and online at www.cdbaby.com/Artist/AndyBrasher.

How'd you get into playing? What's your first music-related memory?

When I was a kid, I couldn’t sleep without the radio being on. So, my first music-related memory is of falling to sleep to Willie, Waylon and Johnny Cash. My dad used to have these ‘jam sessions’ with Pat Coomes, my Uncle Leon, my brother Joey and all sorts of other people. Sometimes they’d jam at the house and I could stay up late with them and watch and listen. At first I kind of played drums on my knees and maybe sang a bit, but eventually, Dad taught me some chords and I tried ‘em out in these jam session settings.

Who influences you the most vocally and instrumentally?

My dad influences me vocally. Instrumentally, there’s probably too many to list.  Skynyrd was an early influence, Zeppelin and Hendrix, and then with the acoustic guitar; Neil Young, Alice in Chains and Steve Earle.

Do you have a pre-show routine, like doing a shot of something?

No. Just getting to the show on time is good. Tuning is good too!

You've logged a ton of shows under your belt; what's been your most memorable moment onstage?

I’ve got a few. One was with Ten Pound Pie at the ill-fated Time Out Lounge at the Big E. They had a male review in the Showroom Lounge that let out at about 11 and all those hyped-up women came across to the show. We were already on stage when they got there, and they were, let’s say, ‘excited.’ They actually started throwing dollar bills at us, even though we weren’t naked. The most recent memorable moment was the release party for my most recent CD, The Brasher/Bogue Project. It was at the Boiler Room and people came out of the woodwork to participate, it’s hard to describe the amount of energy I could feel from the stage. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of my friends for supporting me and coming out for this and other shows!

What's coming up in 2010 for Andy Brasher?

I’m going to continue pushing my songwriting in Nashville, and hopefully do a project with Anthony Smith soon. I’ve got a back log of about 3 albums worth of material I need to record and put on CD. I’ve got an album in the works that I’m calling Last of Our Kind which I should complete this winter. I’m gonna work on my mandolin playing too.
