Calling barflys of all species in the Tri-State area, there is a
laid-back, classic joint in Owensboro,
Kentucky which has something fun
for all in your swarm. Big Ed’s Pool and Pub is a grassroots, no nonsense bar
which prides itself on its ability and willingness to cater to its patrons. On
any given week Big Ed’s offers a variety of entertainment and other
activities.Whether the purpose is to
challenge someone to a friendly game of pool on a weeknight and relax or to let
off some steam at the end of a frustrating work week, Big Ed’s is the ticket.
Music is a vital part of Big Ed’s repertoire.
Rock and roll is the musical monolith for Big Ed’s and it shows. However, there
is other genres present live and otherwise including country and heavy metal.
This place really holds its own and behind the scenes is a hard-working guy who
loves the business and has the experience to execute it well.
“Some people call me a
workaholic but I love what I do.”
Owner and operator
(sometimes freelance bouncer) Ed Ramsey is no newbie in the bar business. He
has been involved with three bars in his 59 years. He began his involvement in
the bar that would become Big Ed’s Pool and Pub as one of three partners. One
of the three decided to pursue other ventures and it passed into Ramsey’s
control. The other partner is now the bar’s manager and is a proud cornerstone
of the house that is Big Ed’s.
“I try to provide
whatever the customer wants, it’s a full-time job,” says Ramsey.
Big Ed’s boast a
separate game room from the bar area with four pool tables used to host 9-ball
and 8-ball tournaments on Fridays and Saturdays. It is open to patrons
regularly, sometimes for free, and lessons are also available. Darts are also
available. For those wanting to enjoy the outdoors, Big Ed’s sports a well-lit
back patio and plans to bring in some “high dollar” bands for outdoor
performances in the future. But make no mistake live music is a staple at Big
Ed’s bound to set the mood for a night of partying and/or relaxation.
It is crystal clear
that Ramsey is devoted to his patrons, the self-proclaimed “good people” of
Owensboro, and keeping his bar versatile and friendly. What more could one ask for?
Oh, and parking isn’t an issue.
