How many people can say they were in a band at age 13? Well, Rockport
native Elliott Sublett can, playing solo in the Americana spirit and also the front man to an
outlaw country band called the Hell Benders. Mostly though, Sublett’s musical
ambition seems to be inexhaustible. This shows that no matter where he is
performing or who he is performing with, he can adapt his playing and his style
to compliment another or visa versa.Being in his sub-prime years as a musician at the age of 23, Sublett
exhibits a musical savvy and versatility which is sure to take him far. If you
are after no BS country or Americana you can
catch Elliott Sublett at Taylor’s
on Sept. 10th-12th.
N4U : So I see you
are averaging about 6-8 shows a month?
ES: Yeah, and that’s really when I book ahead but there is so many
things that come up at the last minute that we always fill in. And I haven’t posted
the dates with Andy Brasher yet either.
How long have you been
playing music?
My dad (Scott Sublett) was real big in Evansville and the tri-state but
yeah I actually picked up the guitar and started singing when I was five and
when I was 13 years old I played in an original alternative rock band (Syphon)
and we just traveled around the Tri-State to play shows. That was just…I was a
young kid enjoying music, the first band I was in and finally it got to the point
‘what am I doing with this.’ So then, I really got back to my roots with more
of the country music.
So when I come see
you out at Caper’s is there going to be some original songs played or?
Not too much at Caper’s unless people ask me for it. At Caper’s I don’t
just do country, I do John Prine, Neil Young, and stuff like that. It’s more of
an environment in which I’m not really loud but everyone can enjoy themselves.
What’s your
favorite stuff to play and play through as far as equipment goes?
Well, for the front house sound I usually always try to use all EV Gear
and if I’m doing a smaller gig I have a Peavey eight channel head I use that’s
really sharp, one of the newer ones. With the band I got a 16 channel Soundcraft
board and I’m pushing about 11,000 watts with UFC/PLX 2 amps.
Where are you going
from here? Are you going to continue playing locally?
No, I actually write with a guy I was introduced to through Andy Brasher,
his name is Dustin Bogue; he lives in Nashville and I have been writing with
him so hopefully we are planning on getting into the studio by November or
December.
