DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: 2 Shows in Owensboro

Girls in Bloom Expo: “Explore It, Nurture It, Express It!”

The Girls in Bloom (GIB) organization was formed by a group of local women who are driven to protect and nurture the adolescence of our city's young girls. For its seventh year, it is conducting the Girls in Bloom Expo which is scheduled for Saturday, February 27 at The Centre.

Girls in Bloom allows middle school aged girls to enter a mature setting where they control the classes they want to participate in and be treated to prizes, gifts and a fabulous luncheon. The day is absolutely free, thanks to generous donations from Tri-State businesses. This year's theme is “Explore It, Nurture It, Express It!” Participants are offered an enormous variety of classes to pick for their day of experience; about 17 programs per hour are offered. In the past there have been classes such as mask painting, using dogs as therapy, the dangers of tanning beds, money management, art, cooking, journal writing, dance, makeup, fashion and dealing with relationships. One of the more popular classes last year was Evansville's American Idol. There are a variety of new choices this year, including an ice hockey introduction class. This forum is also an opportunity for the girls to display any piece of art that they have created. The pieces will be on display throughout the day. Parents are allowed to join their daughters in some of the classes or just hang out in the cafe with coffee, pastries and great reading material.

The organization is trying to create a safe harbor for middle school aged girls to explore new ideas and directions so they can use that knowledge for future character development. Adolescent girls are faced with terrific challenges these days from untold numbers of media sources such as the internet, magazines, television and music. Our society tries to portray to young girls that you have to be thin, beautiful and perfect in order to be of value. Girls at this age are vulnerable to negative influences and it's important that they are exposed to opportunities to build self-esteem through education, exploration and plain old support from key adults in their lives. The women of this organization recognize the importance of positive influence in the lives of adolescent girls and they've turned this intention into a fantastic event.

Anne Topper, the Expo’s director, says that “our goal is to offer programs to create a day of safe risk taking. Safe risk is an important element in self esteem development. Girls are often afraid to try new things because they feel the need to be perfect or the need for approval of their peers.”

Sign up now for this fantastic event. Last year’s Expo was attended by 600 girls and that is the cap again this year. It is for girls from 5^th through and including 8^th grade. Classes are to be chosen by the participants the morning of the event. Area schools will be receiving brochures to be distributed the last week in January. The cost is free and lunch is included!

Dancing with the Devil must appeal to the N.A.R.A.S. membership, as they've gone and done it again - nominated Slayer for a Grammy Award. And the members of Slayer - guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, and drummer Dave Lombardo - are wickedly pleased.

This, Slayer's fourth Grammy nod in the Best Metal Performance category, is for the track "Hate Worldwide," off of the band's new album World Painted Blood. Released November 2, the album has received raves from retail: the album debuted at #12 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums charts; radio: after multiple weeks at #1 on all of the major metal radio charts, the album says farewell to 2009 still firmly embedded in that #1 position; and press: according to one media outlet, World Painted Blood "recaptures the manic fury of Reign in Blood, the range of South of Heaven, and the grand scale of Seasons in the Abyss." In addition, the album was a Top Ten debut in numerous countries outside the U.S., including Germany, Australia, Japan, and Canada.

Heligoland features an all star cast of guest vocals from Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Guy Garvey and Tunde Adebimpe. RANGERS' NEW REBEL RECORDS RELEASE, DEEP IN THE SHADE, AVAILABLE OCTOBER 6

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (September 28, 2009)--Award-winning bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers are preparing to embark on a fall tour with Grammy^®and Emmy^®winning actor, comedian and musician Steve Martin, which will include performances on Late Show with David Letterman on October 5 and The View on October 6.

Martin, who is touring in support of his album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, met the Rangers through his wife, who is a friend of lead singer Woody Platt's brother. Martin and the Rangers played a few concerts together before performing on A Prairie Home Companion earlier this year. During the program, Martin commented on the Rangers to host Garrison Keillor, saying, "They don't need me. I need them."

The fall tour actually started on September 12, when Martin performed at the Rangers' sold-out Mountain Song Festival in Brevard, North Carolina, which raises money for the Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County.

This week the tour continues at the Largo Café at the Coronet in Los Angeles (September 29-30), before Martin and the Rangers perform at the 20^th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on October 1. From there they will travel to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco on October 3, before taking on the Big Apple, with performances on Late Show with David Letterman (October 5) and at Carnegie Hall and The View (October 6). The Steep Canyon Rangers' new Rebel Records release, Deep in the Shade, will be available in stores and online on October 6. Band members Woody Platt on guitar and lead vocals; Graham Sharp on banjo; Mike Guggino on mandolin; Charles R. Humphrey III on bass; and Nicky Sanders on fiddle returned to the studio with star bluegrass singer, songwriter and producer Ronnie Bowman. Sharp, Humphrey and Sanders contributed 10 of the 12 tracks on Deep in the Shade, with material that encompasses a wide range of styles and moods, while remaining firmly in the bluegrass tradition. In Martin's liner notes for the album, he aptly states, "The Rangers' original music is firmly rooted in tradition, and it makes you feel that even though you know you haven't heard this music before, it seems like you have, or at least should have."

AllMusicGuide's review states, "The Steep Canyon Rangers continue their upward arch with Deep in the Shade, another collection of mostly original tunes that blend contemporary bluegrass stylings with folk, gospel, and old-time, hardcore country music."

The Steep Canyon Rangers performed on the Grand Ole Opry on September 25. They also sat down with Kyle Cantrell at Sirius XM's Bluegrass Junction to record a Track by Track program for Deep in the Shade.

Brothers From Different Mothers #1 Album, “Head Hung Down” #1 Song

Brothers From Different Mothers, released in March, is at the #1 position on the Top 15 Bluegrass Albums chart, while “Head Hung Down,” featuring a guest appearance by Statler Brother Harold Reid in his comedy alter ego of Lester “Roadhog” Moran, sits at the top of the song chart.
